Surgical fees - planned and elective surgery
Mark firmly believes that patients who pay medical insurance should not have to pay gap fees for planned or elective surgery. So Mark does not charge a gap fee for all planned surgery including those booked booked through clinic appointments.
Surgical fees - emergency surgery
For emergency cases such as fractures or acute injuries, Mark charges fees in line with the Australian Medical Association (AMA) fee schedule. In general there will be a co-payment required. The exact amount will vary depending on your level of cover. Any payment is not required until at least 2 weeks post surgery and will be discussed with you prior to commencement of treatment.
There are two main reasons for this fee structure:
Firstly by the nature of the injury, accidents and hence trauma surgery tends to take place out of normal working hours i.e. at weekends and in the evening.
Secondly, over the years, renumeration for fracture costs has not kept in line with inflation and hence fracture surgery is poorly paid by most Health Funds.
Mark will therefore charge a gap fee for providing excellent trauma care in the private sector.
